I've been wanting to make a crocheted rug, but was dreading the thought of having to cut all of the strips of fabric. So I was beyond excited when I went to PA Fabric Outlet and they were selling huge spools of ribbion for $10.00. I bought a spool, as I thought that it would be perfect to crochet with. I used a shell crochet stich and made a small round rug for our bedroom. I'm working on a new design now that I"m hoping to put in the living room or dining room when it's finished.
The Paradoxical Creative Brain
The Paradoxical Creative Brain : http://www.dana.org/news/brainwork/detail.aspx?id=736
To create, a person must have knowledge but forget the knowledge, must see unexpected connections in things but not have a mental disorder, must work hard but spend time doing nothing, must be competitive while afflicted by self doubt. These and other paradoxical ideas about creativity and the brain were explored by a panel of two leading neuroscientists and two nationally known creative artists during a public meeting Nov. 14 at the Dana Center.
-" Creativity is the experience of getting our of my head." Kahn
_ Creativitiy needs a nutoring environment
- Anderson: " Boundaries are created artificially that shouldn't be there. We need to train kids to see fewer boundaries, more integration. "

First Day of School
Today marks the first day of another school year. This is my 5th year teaching high school art and I'm really looking forward to meeting new students, as well as welcoming those whom I"ve had several times. I teach in a small school, which means that I teach a total of 6 different art courses, allowing for students to have me several times before they graduate. Hopefully they feel that it's a good thing. I still get butterflies in my stomach the night before. So make sure to take some time and think of all of the teachers and students starting a new school year. I wish everyone the best!

My Work
I've been working hard the last few days, trying to take advantage of the last few hours of summer vacation that our left. I start work today, which I love, but it does greatly cut back on the amount of work that I am able to create. I made a lot this summer, but still have a lot on my list of things that I want to make.... perhaps that is because the list keeps on growing ( a good problem)

I decided to make these pens with flowers on top, as gifts for birthdays. I'm having a lot of fun making them, and hope that they will put a smile on people's faces when they get them.

I"ve been crocheting like crazy, getting work together for my Fall Line. Not sure how many I finished, but it felt good to be super productive.

Why we should all Fight for Art Education
Symposium challenges Americans to reappraise their value of art
Education in the arts may or may not lead to higher math scores, but the skills it does foster are just as necessary, panelists say.
-----Read the full article here:http://www.dana.org/news/features/detail.aspx?id=10080 --------
My Notes:
-work place needs people that are flexible thinkers, the arts train the mind to be flexible
-arts are undervauled in our socitey because they are viewed as a "frill" something extra, this needs to change
-Arts cannot stake claim to raising scores in other classes, but why should they have to, no one expects history class to improve algebra scores
- Art teaches, visual spatial abilities, reflection, self- criticism, willingness to experiments and learn from mistakes
-" Arts display some of the most positive profound and lasting accomplishments of adolscents. They offer a profound opportunity for young people to contribute. But you don't take that opportunity if you don't know about it from a young age. Seidel
- Sen Edward Kennedy- " The current harsher, more aggressive world, may well be due to the fact that we're not giving people opportunities for a gentler world."

My Week
Good morning, I had a really great week, I just didn't take any photos for some reason,so there won't be photos with today's post, sorry. I spent a ton of time creating, and hope to get photos taken and posted this week.
On Saturday I went to the Mt. Gretna art show with a wonderful friend. We've known eachother since high school, and it's great to catch up. The art at Gretna was inspiring, and it was such a perfect day.
Sunday I met a wonderful bride about photographering her wedding. They are getting married at York Country Club, what a pretty place, and fun couple.
I also went into my classroom Sunday afternoon for a few hours. It was good to just get in there and get work done, and begin to figure out what I will be doing to start the year. I can't believe that my room is going to be full of students on the 29th, this summer went so fast, but I"m excited to see the kids again.
I also finished reading The Happiness Project, great book and easy read. I'm going to do a Happiness Project, but it did make me think about somethings that I could change that would makek my life better and more peaceful. Here are a few things that I"m going to focus on doing, and think that they should be especially helpful with work starting up again.
1. Spend 15 minutes each day cleaning/ putting things away ( this if from the Happiness Project) I really hate to clean, and am bad a putting things away, but I also get annoyed when everything is a mess. I know that if I can just get myself to put in 15 minutes a day it would really be helpful, and keep me from having to do due huge cleaning days, that make me mad.
2. I ride my bike to work, which means that I normally leave the house around 5:45am, I really don't love getting up early either. So I'm going to start packing my bag the night before to take away the stress of not being able to find what I need in the morning, and only having a few minutes before I have to get out the door. For some reason I have always waited until the morning to pack my bag, I change clothes, and do my hair and make up once I get to work, so I have to pack a lot. The last minute packing has resulted in my arriving at work without underwear, a bra, and shoes, all of which are rather necessary and make the start of the day a bit stressful.
3. I"m going to keep a food log. My husband is a personal trainer and an amazing cook. He works hard to keep healthy food in the house, and makes us wonderful meals. But I tend to find ways to cheat, I want to stop cheating. So I have given my husband full control over what I eat, and will be keeping a food log to help keep me accountable.
Those are the three goals that I am going to focus on for now... I may add more as I go along, but don't want to many that I can't even remember them. What would you like to change in your life?

Inspiring: Caroline Spellman
While in Ithaca, we went into several galleries and I saw the work of Caroline Spellman. She does amazing quilling.

Quilling, also known as paper filigree, is a craft that has been practiced since the Renaissance. Narrow strips of paper are rolled into coils, shaped, and glued into place. At the height of its popularity, from the late-1700's to the mid-1800's, quilling was a way for ladies of leisure to amuse themselves and patterns were often published in women's magazines of the day. While Caroline continues to do some pieces in these earlier traditions her birds, fish, and butterflies elevate quilling to a new level of artistry.

If Caroline isn't quilling, she is probably working on her garden, which is designed to attract the birds and butterflies that inspire her work.

My Work
I've been wanting to do some pieces on my loom that are more time consuming, and finally decided to give it try.So while pieces are on the loom, I"m also crocheting, when I don't want to do the tedious work. I am currently weaving a piece and hand embroidering a design into the piece to create what could be used as a wall hanging on a create table runner.

Check out these wonderful sculpture forms created by dogknot. http://www.etsy.com/people/dogknot?ref=ls_profile
My work as a painter was always more about sculpture than paint. I considered the paintings objects rather than simply surfaces upon which paint had been applied. The images I painted were containers of a self-imposed, laborious and complex process that was ultimately hidden from the casual viewer. Although still conceptually interesting, I grew more and more detached from the process and desired a more physically engaging and personally truthful form of expression.

Additionally motivated by my desire for a respite from an ever-increasing reliance on technology during daily life, I consciously sought a direct and primal means of creation that required only my hands, mind and a few simple materials. After many years of sculptural explorations since moving away from painting, I was exposed to coiling and other traditional basketry and fiber techniques. These methods of construction quickly became the foundation of my sculptural work.
The pieces physically contain and visibly document the obsessive and laborious construction processes rather than simply depicting (or hiding) them. I am increasingly interested in exposing the insides/undersides that are normally hidden and protected from the viewer as well as continuing to formally explore the body, inside and out, in more abstract terms.
