new! Indoors at Lancaster Convention Center

The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen is relocating its beloved Holiday Fine Craft Fair to the stunning Lancaster County Convention Center in downtown Lancaster on November 12 & 13.

The annual Lancaster area event was held over the last 3 years at the Manheim Township High School off Lititz Pike. The move allows the craft show to grow from 120 exhibitors to 140 exhibitors, and to be exhibited in one large space as opposed to the three spaces used at the high school. The Guild is also teaming up with the Lancaster Parking Authority to offer $2 all day parking for show patrons at five participating parking garages in downtown Lancaster.

“Our mission is to support fine craftsmen and introduce the public to handcrafted works,’ says Guild executive director Sherrie Boyer. ”The move to the Lancaster Convention Center creates more visibility for our craftsmen and more access for patrons and the public. Buying local and buying handmade serve so many needs; our patrons support the arts and local artists – and our craftsmen are able to meet the public, educate about craft, and earn a living. It’s a positive experience for everyone.”

With such a wide array of fine and talented craftsmen right here in the region, why not give handmade and local this holiday season?

Artists from across town and across the region invite community members, patrons, and collectors to view their one of a kind fine crafts from a wide array of media: Large metal sculptures tower above ornately whittled figures. Hand-bound books nestle among ceramic mugs, and wood turned vessels stand with solid composure while delicate hand-woven scarves dance playfully.

Woven and Crocheted Scarf

I wove the orange part of the scarf almost two years ago I really liked the pattern of the scarf, but there was something about the piece that just wasn't me, or didn't really fit into the style of what I make. I have a pile of pieces that didn't turn out well, that need something to make them complete. This piece has been waiting for a solution for quiet sometime. Recently I started playing with adding crochet to pieces after they are woven, and am liking the concept. So here's the orange scarf saved, and ready to be worn lovingly around someones neck.

The other piece is still in progress. It's another orphan that's been waiting to be finished. I think that the crochet part is finished, and I am now working on embrodiery to the piece. Plus my sewing machine comes home fixed and ready to go this afternoon, so I might use it to add some stitching detail as well. What do you think?<table style="width:auto;">

Making Art and Experiencing Flow

From pins

From pins

I've been making a lot of art lately and loving every single minute of it. I really didn't realize how much I had done until I started putting this post together and photographing all of the work. Teaching and making art are really the only things that I have accomplished in the last week or two.

I just finished writing a to do list for this week and have decided that I need to put some dedication into, putting away my laundry, cleaning the house, and getting some grading done at school as the first marking period is about to end. I always feel like I never have enough time to create everything that I want to.

I have been spending a lot of time studying creativity, manily creative thought, what it is, how it works. And one common theme that has popped up in a lot of the books that  I have read is the concept of " flow". The idea behind flow is the ablity to lose oneself in what they are doing, to expreience ecastsy. While studying flow, to help determine when people reach this state, people were given beepers that went off at random times throughout the day, whenever the beeper went off, the people had to write down what they were doing and how they were feeling. You can do this with yourself and your cell phone to help you determine what if anything that you do, puts you into the state of flow.

For me I really didn't need a beeper test, making art is the time that I experience flow, and it really has become something that is so pleasurable for me, that I rarely want to do anything else. Flow is normally reached when working on something that is challenging, but not so challenging that one can't solve the problem. It also tends to appear more in people that have been working in that perticular area for about 10 years. The reason for the 10 years, is the fact that to experince flow you normally need to have some form of mastery over a skill set.

Watch this TED talk for more information on Flow

12 by 2012: Meet with Erma Martin Yost

One of my goals was to meet with felting artist Erma Martin Yost, I met her last year at a book making workshop, and really love her work. She creates wonderful texture, and emotion through felting, stitching, and adding objects to her pieces.

I emailed her a few weeks ago to tell her how much I enjoyed her work and ask her a few questions and she graciously invited me to her home studio.  Her studio space, was perfectly organized ( made me wonder if mine will ever look like that).

She also showed me how her worked has evolved over the years, which was wonderful to see. I always enjoy seeing how people's work progresses. She started as an abstract expressionist painter.

Here are my 12 goals.

1. finish my maters thesis on creativity studies
Chapter 1 is finished, chapter 2 started

2. submit my work to two magazines

3. buy a used dresser for my studio and organize the space
Dresser purchased, now for the organizing

4. create submission piece of Somethings Looming Show

5. meet with felting artist and get advice

6. Make 4 more scarves with metal

7. Create woven design that works like a bow tie

8. get image of Dan and I for our 5 yr anniversary

9. design and launch line of scarf pins

10. develop an ornament design

11. become invovled/ more informed about Art Education Policy

12. Get my work sold in a new Gallery

Her work is currently on display at the Carlise Arts Learning Center, until Nov 5th. If you live in the area I strongly recommend that you go and check her work out.

Knitting and Yarn Lust

I pretty much love anything that has to do with yarn. Drop off at a yarn store, and I'm one happy camper. All of the local yarn store owners know me by name... I guess I shop there a lot.

New Scarves

I just finished creating a wrap for a bride to be. She is getting married in just a few weeks on Nov 16th and requested that I make a wrap for her. The wrap was woven with light weight yarn in off white and cream colors, and then has some hand beading done, with off white beads. I added one of my Sparkler Rock pins to the piece and am really loving how it looks.

This next scarf, the woven part was made a long time ago, but I was never happy with the piece, so it was in pile of work in the studio of work that is waiting for me to come up with a way to fix it so that I'm happy with it. I try to never totally abadon a piece, and work hard to work through my mistakes and learn from them. Recently I've been thinking about combining weaving and crocheting. So I added crocheted edges onto the piece which made it wider ( one of the main reasons that I didn't like it) and I"m happy with how it came out. I then added a pin to the piece and believe that the problem was solved. Love when this happens.
