Choosing Woven Rugs

Woven rugs come in many sizes, shapes and colors to spice up and complement any décor. They are not only inexpensive, they are also sturdy and easy to clean.
You can cover up worn carpet or damaged hardwood floors with room size rugs or scatter smaller sizes around the floors of large rooms. Small woven rugs look great in front of bathroom or kitchen sinks as well as in front of doors that lead to bedrooms, garages or the outdoors. They come in warm, earthy tones or decorated with lively colors to add energy to the decorating scheme. Mix and match neutral colors with vibrant hues throughout the house and vary the shapes to enhance visual appeal.

Rug Resources

No matter where you buy woven rugs, they are generally much less costly than other types. Big box stores and discount retailers have good selections but don’t forget bargain driven websites that sell home furnishings at deep discounts and offer free or low-cost flat rate shipping. Peruse local newspapers and online want-ads for estate and garage sales to find bargains on used woven rugs. Good deals on seconds reduce the price even more and typically contain flaws that are barely visible.

Create Your Own Designs

If you’re a DIY home decorator, purchase plain, woven rugs in light colors such as beige or off white and embellish them at home. For simple geometric designs, all you need is a yardstick, masking tape and fabric paint available at craft stores and home improvement centers. Use the yardstick and a pencil to create a design and then apply masking tape to create a pattern on the rug’s surface. Paint the exposed areas and after the paint dries, remove the tape to reveal your customized rug. For more elaborate designs, buy stenciling kits to decorate the rugs with flower, leaf or character shapes and paint the shapes with colors that set off the walls, furniture and accessories.

Woven rugs add character and color to your home without spending a bundle. Use the money you save with this decorating tip to add other embellishments to your home. You’ll find yourself with a sly smile when friends ask you who your “decorator” is as they admire your new surroundings.
