Selling on Etsy

From june 2012

I've been getting a lot of questions lately about where is the best place for artists to sell their work. There are a lot of different options, so I'm going to take the time to share some about the sites that I use. But each person needs to do some of their own research, determine what site fits them the best, and then give a few a try.

There is no magical site out there.

First for all sites you need to have good photos, this is something that I"m always working to improve. It's a bit of a challenge as I model my work and take my own photos. Most importantly they need to be sharp, and properly exposed, and they need to show off your work.

Today's site is Etsy.com . I've had an etsy shop for a few years and have gone back and forth on how much effort I put into it. I will say, if you don't put time and energy into your shop. You're not going to see sales. You need to have good photos that catch the eye. Informative descriptions that tell why your work is special, way you do what you do, and then specifics about the piece. I'm currently going through my shop, updating photos, and descriptions. I'm hoping to have this all complete by the end of the week.

The good thing about etsy is that they only charge you .20 per listing, and  it is set up so it's really easy to share your listing onto facebook, pinterest, and twitter. This is an example of a good looking shop. http://www.etsy.com/shop/NorTin?ref=seller_info

Pros about etsy.com

1. It's easy to use
2. very low cost
3. easy to share on other social media sites ( which I suggest that you do)
4. allows you to accept credit cards and paypal
5. reaches people all over the world

Cons

1. It's hard to get noticed there are tons of shops out there
2. huge range in price on very similar items, some  people selling that you are trying to make a living versus those that are doing it for a hobby

Overall it's a good site, and you really don't have much to lose. But I will emphasize again, work to my make your photos something that you are proud of, that represent you and your work, and show how you work is to be used.

No problem Lind-design. It's often helpful to hear other's views when there are so many choices out there. My goal is to really help creative people to determine the best way to share their work with others.
