THe New Yorker: Cool For School

Members of the Blue Man group start their own school.

Imagine a school that people wouldn’t have to recover from,” Wink said. The couples have devised their own guiding philosophy, drawing heavily from what is known as the Reggio Emilia approach to education, developed in Italy after the Second World War, which emphasizes empowering children by encouraging their creativity.

My Husband's Garden

My husband has created a wonderful garden in our backyard. Not only does it look great, but it's so much fun to walk out the backdoor and be able to pick food for lunch. Our strawberry patch just ended, and now we're enjoying raspberries. I think that I make a fruit smoothie everyday. I"m so thankful that he takes the time to do this. While I love eating from the garden, I"m really not a fan of weeding, or picking.

Etsy Finds: LeBestiaire

I just discovered this wonderful shop this week. What great tops!

A little bit about the artist:
Open a middle ages compendium in which characters would be real or fabled animals, then have a look inside the “Cabinet of natural curiosities” by a certain Albertus, now add some wonderful and poetic roses, iris or anemones plate drawn by the great Pierre-Joseph Redouté.

Shake it, open and let’s see what happens …

Feathers drawn with a stroke of a brush or palms painted on silk, scales and metal leaves or more leather petals, golden pistils, maybe just simple embroidered tentacles …

Each piece of this collection is unique and searchingly hand-made.

My work

I haven't gotten as much done this week as I had hoped. Taking care of the dog keeps me from getting any solid amount of time in the studio. But here's what I did mangae to get finished.

Newsweek: The Creativity Crisis

Great Article about why creativity is important, and how the United States is losing it. To read the full article go here: http://www.newsweek.com/2010/07/10/the-creativity-crisis.html

Back in 1958, Ted Schwarzrock was an 8-year-old third grader when he became one of the “Torrance kids,” a group of nearly 400 Minneapolis children who completed a series of creativity tasks newly designed by professor E. Paul Torrance. Schwarzrock still vividly remembers the moment when a psychologist handed him a fire truck and asked, “How could you improve this toy to make it better and more fun to play with?” He recalls the psychologist being excited by his answers. In fact, the psychologist’s session notes indicate Schwarzrock rattled off 25 improvements, such as adding a removable ladder and springs to the wheels. That wasn’t the only time he impressed the scholars, who judged Schwarzrock to have “unusual visual perspective” and “an ability to synthesize diverse elements into meaningful products.”

Like intelligence tests, Torrance’s test—a 90-minute series of discrete tasks, administered by a psychologist—has been taken by millions worldwide in 50 languages. Yet there is one crucial difference between IQ and CQ scores. With intelligence, there is a phenomenon called the Flynn effect—each generation, scores go up about 10 points. Enriched environments are making kids smarter. With creativity, a reverse trend has just been identified and is being reported for the first time here: American creativity scores are falling.

Home Decorating

I really wish that I had more time to invest in organzing and decorating our home, but it just doesn't seem to happen very often. I purchased a vintage world map in Feb, and just now got around to hanging it in the living room. My husband wanted a map, so that we would keep track of where we have traveled and where we want to go. I love maps, but wanted it to look good hanging in the house, not just some random map tacked to the wall. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Now we need to get marking where we want to go.

Peca

Our sweet dog Peca, had to get a growth removed from her leg yesterday. She's 8 years old, but still pretty full of energy, she loves going for walks, and most of all loves guarding our cat Velo all day long. She really spends the whole day watching that cat. However, in order for her leg to heal, she isn't allowed to steps, can't go for walks, and isn't allowed to run, so we have her seperated from the cat. She just doesn't seem to know what to do with herself. Plus she was sent home wearing one of those lovely cones to keep her from picking at her stitches, she just walks around the house running into things, and spilling her water dish as she tries to take a drink. I feel really bad for her, as it doesn't look like fun, and I'm sure that she has no clue as to what is being done to her.
