Take a bubble bath

I just love this soap shop on etsy, the soap looks good enough to eat. I asked the maker how she began soap making and to tell us a little bit about herself, here's what she said. Click here to get yours today, http://www.etsy.com/shop/magichands

Photobucket

let's see - my mom grew up on a farm, and making her own soap was a normal part of life. i made it with her as a kid. it was strictly white functional blocks, harsh and unscented. ten years later, one rainy afternoon i decided to make a batch for fun. the first thing i did was look it up on the internet to make sure i knew what i was doing. i was astonished at what i found - soap in a wild array of colors and scents, with fabulous shapes and textures. the next thing i knew i was making batch after batch, perfecting formulas and techniques.

Photobucket

i've been selling for about ten years now - which kind of makes me an old-timer, i guess. part of the secret to my success on etsy is that i arrived with an established customer base. and i'm lucky in that my husband is a talented artist and photographer. i know it gets said a lot, but photos are a huge part of online marketing.

Photobucket

i do a lot of wholesale and private label work, and i'm alredy looking forward to the summer farmer's market season. i think to be successful at your own business, you have to take advantage of every opportunity.

i recently went full time with soaping, and i'm loving it. the only problem is working constant twelve hour days - i'm the meanest boss i've ever had! Pin It

I saw these wonderful pieces of pottery on etsy the other day, and was eager to hear from the artist about what inspires her to make such colorful, and fun pieces. Pottery was my first love, before I was introduced to weaving, and I never totally broke it off with pottery. It is something that I am drawn to, and wanted to share these great pieces with all of you. Maker of these great pieces Lyn explains how she became interested in making pottery.

Photobucket

hi, i just have to say that i have been a "clay addict" all of my life, i remember in 2nd grade begging the art teacher to let me try the potters wheel in the corner of the room, and it all took off from there. another common thread has always been color, i just love to play with color, off beat color (which is not always easy to achieve at high temperatures, what you see in your "minds eye" is not always what you get with glazes. i am drawn to a retro style with a modern twist, i LOVE antiques, i am intrigued by old objects, how they were made and why they have survived .... to think of the wonderful pottery that was made thousands of years ago, and then to REALIZE they had NO resources, no stores, no electricity, only desire, alot of time and ingenuity, and need, as these things were all utilitarian .... etsy is so wonderful because it reaches a world audience, very simple to access and allows everyone a stage, as we all have creative talent in us! cheers ~ lyn

HELP

I am a high school art teacher, and currently we are disuccsing why art, craft, and creative thought are an important part of life and society. For a homework assignment my students must ask 15 people why they believe that art is important, and then record the anwsers to share with the class. When possible I try to do the assignments that I give my students, as they respond much better when they see that their teacher is doing what she is asking them to do. So I need your help, leave a comment explaining why you think that art, craft, and creative thought are important, I will then take the comments and create a running post. Please also ask your friends to stop by and leave their comments, my goal is to have at least 100 comments by tomorrow to share with my students.!

Here are some creative people, enjoy!

I believe art and creativity are vital to a healthy existence! Some of us are creatively-orientated and the best way to express ourselves is through the works that we produce! If we can't do this, it's like we can't show people who we really are! Art gives a little insight into the minds of those who might seem quiet or withdrawn. Or, to those who are extroverted in nature, art is a way to really see another side to their personality. Good question to ask :)

So many societies, ours included, have become so wrapped up in progress and success that we often don't find time to "smell the roses".

Art and creativity help provide relief from our day to day stresses, encourage self-expression, allow the imagination to wander and, in some forms, connect us with our past. The benefits of stress relief are vital to our well-being, self-expression reminds us that we are worth being, imagination has been the source for nearly every invention known to man, and connecting with our pasts helps remind us who we are.

All in all, I believe that art and creativity are essential to being human.

Kenjio

I just had to share this wonderful etsy shop that I stumbled across this weekend. I am in love with these figure sculptures, each piece seems to carry so much emotion, and I love the fact that the artist uses recycled materials. The only thing better than art is art that is made from what most people would consider trash. I strongly believe that one purpose of art is to inform others of the beauty around them that they are missing, as well as to teach that each and every thing has value and should be cherished and properly cared for, creating as little waste as possible. To bring one of these lovely treasures into your home click here http://www.etsy.com/shop/Kenjio. What have you made recently out of recycled materials?

Photobucket

My work started from the inadequacy of words in my journal.

My sculpture series is a three-dimensional journal that conveys snippets of my emotions and feelings toward life. I often write my experiences in a journal but find it inadequate to convey how I truly feel. As a result, I translate these wordy descriptions to a visual form that is three-dimensional, metaphorical, and expressively relevant.

Photobucket

I call these sculptures "three dimensional hieroglyphs of my experiences." Often times, the true meaning of text and words are just beneath that thin layer of their lexical meaning. In other words, we live in a metaphorical world. One of such metaphors in Book Atlas - http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=40009305

I made this piece to reflect the weight of new knowledge and reconciliation of conflicting ideas.

I usually let the found object "speak" to me. These objects are usually recycled objects such as unwanted books and magazines. Once they insprire or bless me with an idea that come as a vision, I make the piece.

For today I decided to honor my home state of PA and choose sellers from Pa. This first seller had me as soon as I saw this wonderful chocolate and peanut butter combo, two of my favorite things. In fact my dog Peca received her name from my love for the two. I was stumped on what to name this new puppy so I lay on the couch and had words bouncing through my head, finally I begin to dream of chocolate and peanut butter, so I started mixing letters from those two words until got something that I liked, Peca! Who knows what great ideas you may get while eating this wonderful little treat.

Well after you have your chocolate treat, then go take a nice hot bath and use this great strawberry scurb. It just looks so smooth and creamy, and with how dry my skin is from the winter weather and swimming, I just thought that is would be a wonderful treat.

Well I must confess that my husband does all of the dishes, which is perhaps why I only have positive fun thoughts when I look at these wonderful dish towels. I just love the bright colors, and they also look wonderfully soft. I"m sure that if I did have to do the dishes these would make my experience much more enjoyable.

I always have a sketchbook in my bag, however, mine in normally just a boring little black book. When  I saw all of the wonderful colored journals that this shop has I fell in love. However, my rule is I have to fill one sketchbook before I purchase another, I used to have a bad habit of writing ideas in about three different books, but then I could never remember what book I wrote it in. So I think I might put one of these on my birthday list for April, and work on getting lots of great ideas so that I can fill up the current book that I"m working in. Where do you write down all of your great ideas, or even just what you have to do for the day? Wouldn't it be more fun to look at a to do list in one of these wonderful treasurers? Pin It

Sunday Scarves

Photobucket

I wanted to take some time and share with you the newest scarves that I have been making. This wonderful red one is my  most recent. I am always looking to learn new patterns and new techniques on the loom. While weaving I am interested and conntected to the process of discovery. I watching how colors react when they are interwoven, as well as what can happen with new patterns. While viewing the show "A Craftsman's Journey- Enhancing People's Lives", there was a wonderful scarf there that had bits of a thicker yarn running throughout, this interested me. So I did a little bit of reading and then decided to give it a try. This piece is not the same as what I saw, but I am happy with the result, and love that it is different on each side, making it two great scarves in one. This scarf can be yours today http://etsy.com/shop/amberkane, free shippin!

Photobucket

Weaving as an art form is very specific and organized, which ironically is the opposite of my personality. I tend to be free and rather disorganized, so I felt a need to find a way to marry the two while keeping a high level of craftsmanship.

Photobucket

Last summer I decided to not work and to not go back to school. I was determined to merge my work and voice into a weaving style that I  could call my own. My days were spent riding my bike 20 miles, and then spending the rest of my day in the studio. During the early morning bike rides I began to be mesmerized by the fields of crops that I passed daily and the scenery began to impact my work.

I felt that there was a great deal of beauty in these fields that most people were missing, and I wanted to find a way to bring it to them. Through the journey of transforming the fields into functional accessories I was able to bring together the craft of weaving and my free flowing personality.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Each scarf is created by weaving 6 yards of fabric. After the piece is woven I take it off of the loom and pull on the weft strings to create the texture. I pull until I am happy with how it looks and how it feels. I also enjoy watching the scarf transform as each weft thread is pulled. As I left go of following strict patterns and specific rules, I was able to bring myself to my weaving and my weaving began to bring life to me, creating a wonderful partnership between the maker and the created.

Perfect outfit

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=41054042

Photobucket

After a week at work I think of nothing better than lounging around the house in my sweats, however, while I"m cozy in my sweats I'm dreaming of having enough energy to get dressed up and go out on a fun and romantic date with my husband. So I did the next best thing, I searched through some great shops on etsy and picked out what I would love to wear.  I just love this dress, the detail is wonderful and the ruffles are just enough to add a wonderful femine touch but not over done. I would love to wear this wonderful little dress. This shop is full of wonderfuly unique pieces of clothing, be sure to check them out.

Well once I"m in my cute little dress I'm going to need something to keep me warm, as the ground is still covered with snow, which I love. I really like this jacket as I think you could dress it up or down depending on the occasion. I enjoy the one big button and free flowing material.

Kinies explains how she became interested in making these wonderful bags.
"I love to play with jigsaw puzzles, and making bags is just like playing with jigsaw puzzles, to combine the different sizes parts and make a completed bag. I really enjoy the process of making and designing bags. I created my own bags since I was 17. I learned sewing skill from my Auntie, my very 1st Bag was a small size double strap shoulder bag WITHOUT LINING AND POCKETS. haha but it was cute... and I was proud of myself for making that purse on that moment. "

Photobucket

Well any women isn't complete without her bag. I tend to carry around a big red bag full of who knows what, it's always loaded with some kind of art supplies, as well as some things from the school day. I just like to be prepared and enjoy having a big sack full of whatever I may need. I also always carry a sketchbook with me, so that I am ready whenever an idea pops into my head. I love the first bag for it's unique style and design, you can hardly tell that it's even a bag. And the second I love for the wonderful seem work and of course the size. I'm just thinking of all of the fun things I could put in there.

http://etsy.com/shop/amberkane

Photobucket

And lastly no outfit is complete without a wonderful scarf draped around your neck. I wear scarves almost everyday, I love the that they provide, but also that something so simple can spruse up any outfit, I use scarves like pieces of jewerly, they work all seasons and for all outfits, and whats better than to have a one of a kind handmade scarf. So have fun, enjoy your weekend, and do a little handmade shopping. Pin It
